Union Pacific Tidewater Subdivision

The "Tidybowl" Today

Modesto, California.

In a scene never to be repeated, two UP GP40s enter the 9th Street trackage with a southbound Tidewater train.  Lead unit 671 is a long way from home, having come to the UP from the MKT Railroad where it was number 236.  She was originally built for the Penn Central.  As former WP GP35s were retired, the UP assigned many former Katy GP40s to cover WP local runs vacated by the GP35s.  The white building behind the lead unit is the Old Mill Cafe, long a TS and Modesto landmark and, like the street trackage, one which barely survived into the new millenium before being consigned to history.
