date unknown.  Stockton, California.

Looking fresh and clean, non-rail observers would be surprised that TS 746 was over 20 years old in this scene.  Waiting in Stockton, the 746 could be heading south to Modesto and Turlock soon... or heading north to aid sister road Sacramento Northern.  In the waning days of seperate subsidiary identity, the roadnames on the locomotives were sometimes only a suggestion as to their assignments.

One oddity with the 746's scheme is the roadname on the hood sides.  Each side of the 746 wore the name differently.  The "left" side shown here had the name centered.  The "right" side, seen in this photo, had the roadname slightly staggered.  Sister 747 was different again, having the name staggered farther than on the 746.  The 747 also wore a frame stripe that is absent on the 746.
