February 28, 1975.  Stockton, California.

Missing a headlight and looking scruffy, 747 is nearing the end of its career and may even be out of service in this photo.  The whiskers of the WP's Stockton Roundhouse were the regular resting place for dead or nearly dead power in the 1970's.  The RS1 would be formally retired late in 1975 and scrapped by the end of the year.

Details

A nice close-up showing the details of the horn and spotlight mounting on the 747's cab.  All TS diesels except some of the Alco S2s featured the rooftop spotlight after the 1950's.  Worked with a pistol grip in the cab ceiling, similar to a police officer's spotlight, the lights were installed after a spate of grade crossing accidents and were used to warn motorists of the approaching trains.  This feature was unique in the WP family to the Tidewater Southern.
