September 1969 or 1970

Alco S2 744 (second) pulls through Escalon during its short tenure.  This locomotive was an ex-Western Pacific unit, replacing the ex-MP first 744.  The 744:2 served less than one year before being sold to Oakland Terminal.  Although reported scrapped in the early 1980's, some reports have the 744:2 being sold to Levin Metals in Richmond.  Levin is said to have rebuilt the engine, then a mix-up led to its scrapping.

This photo is dated September 1970, however every record I have checked shows the 744:2 being sold in February 1970.
