February 1969.  Stockton, California.

Far from its original midwestern haunts, first 744 had a short tenure in the Central Valley.  In this shot at the WP Stockton Roundhouse, the paint looks nice and spiffy, but the engine will be retired and traded to the WP by summer.   TS 743, the last of the road's 70 tonners, has been sold just a few months earlier, leaving the railroad, briefly, with only two locomotives.  By the beginning of 1970, the arrival of the RS1s will bring the roster up to three, but by then the first 744 (and even its successor) will have left TS service.
