November 27, 1944.  Ninth Street, Modesto,CA.

While the TS would occasionally borrow wood body motor 601 from the SN and other freight motors from the CCT, World War II found the road taking long-term possesion of familiar SN 601 and new-comer SN 602.  Both motors were ex-Oakland, Antioch and Eastern built by Holman.  The TS scrapped the pantographs from both and put them to work while its own 106 was on the SN helping run freight from Oakland to Sacramento.

This exceptional shot shows the 602 heading down Ninth Street.  While the steam engine is not in its usual position behind the juice jack, it is in the train.  For some reason the steamer is bringing up the rear.  On page 194 of California Traction Company by Dave Stanley and Jeffrey Moreau, one can find another Al Rose photo, taken 23 days earlier at this exact same location, showing CCT box motor 10 pulling another train northbound, this time with the steamer buried mid-train.

"This view of SN 602 was taken about 200 feet south of the intersection of 9th and H Streets. Turner Hardware (the building to the right of 602) was a fixture in the region into the 1970s--a great old place with wooden floors and a hardware selection reminiscent of the original Orchard Supply stores. They also sold various appliances and housewares and every Christmas, had a nice selection of electric toy trains."    --Ted Benson
