probably 1935-1940.  Modesto, California

Nice shot showing the 106 in its "austere" years.  The unit has lost "Railway" from the roadname and had one window per cab side blanked.  Considering that the 106 carried its air compressor in the cab the crew must have baked on hot summer days.  An interesting detail are the rerailers visible on the right side walkway.  At this point, the 106 and 100 were strictly used in Modesto to tow steam trains down Ninth Street and work the few remaining electrified spurs.  The rerailers could prove very handy in this kind of service.

Photo was taken at the Modesto terminal.
