1938. Stockton, California.
Looking every bit the workhorse it was, TS second 1 steams away in Stockton. A coating of
oil and grime shows that the 47 year old engine still earns its keep. The low light nicely highlights the running gear and rods. The venerable engine was built in 1891 as passenger power for the Rio Grande Western in Utah.
Transferred to the Denver and Rio Grande when it merged the RGW, the future TS second 1 probably evolved into a dual service role. With its purchase by the WP, it became a dedicated freight locomotive and eventually acquired smaller, 55"
driving wheels, replacing its original 60" drivers.
